A Test on Google SERPs: Category Filters in Siri’s Video Boxes!

The filters (sometimes called pills or lozenges) we often see above the image boxes in a Brand SERP are very helpful, especially in finding related images to the brand we are searching for.
However, are these filters as effective for users when placed above the video boxes? Hmmm. Maybe not.
Have a look at this SERP experiment that Google is trying on Siri’s video boxes. Bonus! I’ll give a piece of advice for brands producing videos for the future proliferation of this additional feature 😉

Hi and welcome. I’m Jason Barnard. I’m the Brand SERP Guy and today, we’re looking at the Brand SERP for Siri. Now, over here on the right, we can see that Google says it’s a system software. I think Google’s got that wrong. It’s actually a virtual assistant as is clearly stated in Wikipedia, but that’s not the point today.
The point today is this in the video boxes, we have these filters in the form of lozenges or pills. We can click on them and it sends us through to video results with this additional filter added, which is really interesting because generally speaking, you only see them in image boxes.
Now, I thought Google had done a pretty bad job. Beatbox doesn’t make sense to me, but actually it does. Apparently, people are asking Siri to be a beatbox. And we can see here, the lozenges, the filter. And I looked at roast, very strange. Siri roasting, apparently that’s the thing as well. So Google is actually got this very right. So it’s even more important than ever before to optimize your videos so that Google understands what’s in them because these filters are gonna become more and more prevalent.
And you want to be sure that you can appear on these filters on your competitors Brand SERPs but also dominate the Brand SERPs when it’s your own brand that’s being filtered, make sure that all of this space is yours. People are going to be moving around Google SERPs more and more. And this is the future of Brand SERPs is to make sure that you are dominating every aspect and every possible jump from your Brand SERP.
