Do The Dictionary Hostel Truly Own their Google ‘My’ Business Profile?

Barry Schwartz said Goodbye to Google My Business and Hello to Google Business Profile.

With this change on the biggest business listing on the web, a lot of questions and assumptions arise.

  • What did they imply when they removed the word ‘My’?
  • How much control do businesses have over their GMB (now GBP) panel?
  • How will the level of control they have change in the future?

A super interesting topic for me 🙂 So here’s a quick analysis of the The Dictionary Hostel’s GBP panel to show you what the renaming could’ve meant.

Watch until the end 😉

Transcript:

Hi and welcome. I’m Jason Barnard. I’m the Brand SERP Guy and today, we’re looking at the Brand SERP for The Dictionary Hostel. It’s a youth hostel in Shoreditch in London, and I stayed there four or five years ago with my daughter for Christmas and it was absolutely delightful, but that’s not the point today.

The point today is the Google My Business on the right-hand side. Recently, a couple of days ago, Google changed that to Google Business Profile. Now, I believe that is because the idea of ‘my’ gives people, the idea they own the profile and that they can control the profile and increasingly, that isn’t the case.

So the Google Business Profile suggests that Google arresting back control, in my opinion. And they’re gonna start pushing out more and more information that the businesses do not control themselves. And here’s a very big example that we’ve seen for a while is ads in the middle, obviously not controlled, obviously taking business away from the business. That implies that it really isn’t ‘my business panel’.

It’s Google’s business profile for my business. A subtle change, but I think very meaningful. Thank you very much and I’ll see you soon.
