When writing meta titles and descriptions, more than focusing on the optimal number of characters and adding keywords you should focus on crafting a message that is attractive to humans. After all, search engines are working hard to be more human, don’t you agree?

When you research how to optimise meta titles, you are bombarded with technical answers and word counting that aims to turn check the boxes for automatic SEO analysis (at Kalicube, we call that “Turning Yoast Green”). Counting the number of characters and keywords is a big part of that. But for your homepage, when writing meta titles and descriptions you should really only focus on crafting a message that communicates who you are, what you do and why your audience would want to do business with you. Goldstream Sports do this very well and it is an effective strategy for digital branding and helping Google understand what the business is all about and communicate that to its users.

Hi, I’m Jason Barnard. I’m the Brand SERP Guy and today, we’re looking at the Brand SERP for Goldstream Sports who are a bicycle store in Esther, Alaska. Now I saw that and I saw this picture here. It seems very cold and snowy for cyclists. And I would have thought they would only ever do business in the summer, but it turns out they also do skiing.

So they cover all their bases and they’ve got the summer and the winter business worked out, but that’s not the point today. The point today is this left-hand rail right at the top. This, and it’s something that too many businesses overlook. The home page aims to convince prospects and clients that this is the right place for them to be going.

Goldstream Sports have understood that they need to brand their home page. Goldstream sports; the trail starts here! Exciting. It must appeal to their audience of cyclists and skiers. Then Goldstream Sports provides knowledgeable friendly service to cyclists and cross-country skiers. Our full-service shop in Alaska’s beautiful Goldstream… That indicates who they are, what they do, who their audience might be and why that audience might want to go to that shop. That is pretty much for me in the brand SERP context, the perfect meta title and description. Great stuff, Goldstream. And I think other businesses would do well to follow this example.
