Google Adapting SNCF’s Reservations Phone Number For International Dialing

SNCF is France’s national state-owned railway company and they have global aspirations that are reflected in their Knowledge Panel. How?

Looking at the phone number in the knowledge panel in three different countries, the number is the same but the international dialing prefix of the number changes for each country. Google is super-geo-sensitive and adapts the information it gives to its users. Fantastic!

Transcript:

Hi, I’m Jason Barnard. I’m the Brand SERP Guy and today, we’re looking at the Brand SERP for the SNCF, which is the French national railway company and although they’re French, they have global aspirations. So here, I’m looking from Alaska in the USA, and I wanted to focus on this right-hand side because here we have a French telephone number with an international prefix and it’s the correct international prefix for America. So when I click on that number, I will get through to the SNCF in France, straight away. Now I wondered in other countries, what does Google do? How is the SNCF organizing itself? It actually has the same number worldwide, which is actually pretty smart because Google is able to adapt here in Australia.

We have 0011, but the same French telephone number after. So Google has adapted from here to here, just the external dialing code from the country. Then I looked at London, here we go. And we have exactly the same situation, 00 and then the same number. So whatever country I’m in, when I click on this link.

I will be put through to the SNCF in France without having to think about it. That’s a great user experience. Google is doing a great job in that right rail making sure that it’s giving me the correct reservations number, wherever I might be in the world. Thank you very much and I’ll see you soon.
